curriculum & courses

During the program, we took two courses: Scand 50W {Introduction to Scandinavian Literatures and Cultures} and Scand 143C {Scandinavian Crime Literature}.

We discussed fairytales, crimes, mysteries, and superstitions. The lectures and conversations were eye-opening, where we made connections to modern day phenomena regarding various political, social, economic, and cultural themes. The curriculum was interdisciplinary and intriguing: we addressed topics in psychology, geography, sociology, to name a few.

We had the opportunity to learn and grow both inside and outside of the classroom. In the photo above, Professor Wen enlightens us about Scandinavian culture during a field trip.

What is your favorite part about the Summer Travel Study Program?  “My favorite part is seeing Copenhagen and Denmark through the eyes of the students who are here for the first time...I’ve been coming now for 3 years in a row and have gotten to know the city better each time, but when we go on these excursions and students are super excited, I feel that way again. The ability to see Copenhagen and Denmark through fresh eyes is definitely my favorite part.”

How do Scand 50W and Scand 143C vary on campus and abroad?  “The biggest difference abroad are the actual sight visits relate to the literature, which adds a different dimension and understanding to the curriculum. Being here and seeing places brings a much deeper understanding. Also, it’s not just visiting a museum or a church, it’s also about living and interacting with locals, learning about cultural differences first-hand.”

What is the most important takeaway from this experience?  “The most important takeaway from this experience for students is to discover that there is a whole world and people outside of their own backyard. It is a good reminder that while we are in our own world stressed out at UCLA, life goes on outside of there! Also to experience the adventure of travel! It’s important to focus on the journey and not just the destination.”
